What to Do During and After a Storm What to Do During and After a Storm

When a storm damages your home or property, it’s important to understand that every damage requires a specific solution. However, the process to address this issue, such as cleanup and restoration, remains the same.

Heavy rains, tornadoes, severe weather, or just a waterflood at home can be very stressful to measure, and even more stressful to overcome. But it’s a serious issue that needs an emergency plan of action at home or office.

According to the National Weather Service, there are some aspects to do during and after a storm.

During a storm, if you are in a warning area:

  • Keep closely monitor radio, TV, and NOAA Weather.
  • Complete preparation activities, such as putting up storm shutters, storing loose objects, etc.
  • Leave immediately if told to do so.
  • If you are evacuating, leave early, if possible, in daylight.
  • Inform family members and neighbors outside of the warned area of your evacuation plans.
  • Put food and water out for a pet if you cannot take it with you.

During a storm, if you are in staying at home:

  • Only stay in a home if you have NOT been ordered to leave.
  • Stay inside a well-constructed building. In structures, such as a home, examine the building and plan in advance what you will do if winds become strong. Strong winds can produce deadly missiles and structural failure.
  • Turn refrigerator to maximum cold and open only when necessary.
  • Turn off utilities if told to do so by authorities.
  • Turn off propane tanks.
  • Unplug small appliances.
  • Fill the bathtub and large containers with water for sanitary purposes.

If winds become strong during the storm:

  • Even if the windows and doors are covered, stay away from them.
  • Plan to evacuate if you live in a mobile home.
  • Take refuge in a small room, closet or hallway.
  • If you live in a two-story house, go to an interior first-floor room, such as a bathroom or closet.
  • If you are in a multiple-story building and away from the water, go to the first or second floors and take refuge in the halls or other interior rooms away from windows.

 After the storm:

  • Wait until an area is declared safe before entering.
  • Keep listening to radio, TV, and NOAA Weather.
  • Don’t drive into flooded areas and avoid weakened bridges.
  • Check gas, water, and electrical lines and appliances for damage.
  • Avoid areas with electrical damage, standing water may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect for damage.
