Dealing with water damage can certainly be exhausting, especially when you are faced with a substantial level of devastation. From floods to broken pipes to leaky faucets, there is never a convenient time for water damage. That is why acting quickly while utilizing the right services and resources is crucial in the run to save money in restoration costs. If water damage strikes your home, call SERVPRO of Martin County to take care of the problem from the start of the restoration and mitigation to the end of the restoration process.

Here are a few tips for homeowners to perform when dealing with water damage while they wait for help to arrive:

  1. Stop the flow of water. If resulting from something different than a natural disaster, try to control the damage by shutting off the water line. This will prevent water from running
  1. Turn off the power. If water is putting at risk electrical appliances located in the basement or the upper levels, evaluate the possibility of cutting off the electricity and gas from the main source (as long as it is safe for you). If your house is flooded and things are far from being under control, ask for help before entering the water. Make sure you understand the risks before performing any activity that involves electricity.
  1. Protect your appliances. If water is rising but hasn't reached appliances yet, raise them by piling up wide bricks that can stand their weight. This will help to keep appliances dry and safe.
  1. Assess the damage. Before the repair and cleanup process begins, assess the damage by inspecting and documenting all affected areas. Whenever possible, wipe up and remove the excess water in order to prevent standing water creating additional problems.
  1. Try to save your most valuable possessions. If the conditions allow it, remove your most valuable possessions from affected areas and find a provisional place to dry and store them. Rescue whatever is likely to get completely damage over time while being exposed to water. When dealing with furniture or items made from fabric, remove and prop up wet upholstery and cushions and place items on a dry surface.
